Welcome to the Department of Dyes and Chemical Engineering (DCE), Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX).
The mission of the undergraduate program is to develop students’ understanding of the core scientific, mathematical, and engineering principles that form the foundation underlying these processes. The curriculum focuses on fibre-forming polymers, textile chemistry and chemical analysis, and the synthesis of dyes and chemicals. The department also focuses on applying chemicals and colourants in various textile processing such as pretreatment, dyeing, printing, finishing, and pollution control. The target is to create the academic, technical and business leaders for today and tomorrow who will employ the skills sets of industrial processes and scientific advances.
We aspire to create a unique multidisciplinary research environment where collaboration is the key; within the departments, faculties, and industries. The strength of DCE is its people, and we strongly welcome the very best staff, students and researchers from around the country and world to become part of our mission. Currently, the textile industry is at a critical junction – trying to add more value and localise the input. The chemical industry, with a market of almost $1 billion USD, is mostly input dependent apart from some basic chemicals. It is foreseen that the local chemical industry for textile applications will flourish to reduce the cost and lead time.
We believe a combination of Textile and chemical engineering is the key to making a better tomorrow and Bangladesh.
Vision of the Department
Department of DCE strives to contribute in national and global through knowledge, research, and innovation in synthesis, separation, formulation, and applications of textile dyes and chemicals.
- Modernization of existing Teaching-Learning system and curriculum through incorporating Outcome-based Teaching-Learning system and curriculum.
- Infrastructure and other necessary facilities such as digital classroom, labs and libraries will be developed to provide better teaching-learning and research environment.
- Develop a Quality Culture through Teaching-Learning, Staff Development, Student Activities and Management system.
- Promote Research and Innovation through strong industry linkage and collaboration with other local and global research and educational institutions.
- Active contribution in policy making within the University, Country and Global.
The program is designed to fulfill the following specific objectives:
- To provide basic and in-depth knowledge and know-how to the students in the area of color chemistry, textile chemicals, process technology, and applications.
- To provide need-based quality education for the students to meet the industry requirements in local and global.
- To engage students in independent research design and personal development & management through a combination of multidisciplinary course works and research, in combination with seminar, assignment, competition, exhibition and other co-curricular activities.
- Promote students to link-up with local and global textile chemicals and dyestuffs manufacturing companies and industries so that the students can understand the real life application, effectiveness, effects & impacts, and problems.
- Nurture a motivating academic environment through exchange and research collaboration with local and international organizations and professionals.
- Planting social values & responsibilities, justice, environmental awareness, and ethics in the mind of students.
After completion of B.Sc. in Textile Engineering (Dyes & Chemicals) program the students will be able to:
- Know the basic concepts of synthesizing and formulizing the chemicals and colorants used in textile processing.
- Understand the properties and application of textile chemicals, colorants and auxiliaries.
- Know the effects and impacts of textile chemicals, colorants and auxiliaries on environment and ecology.
- Asses and analyze the nature, strength and purity of chemicals.
- Identify and analyze the root causes of problems and probable solutions by using analytical equipment and instruments.
- Comparing and Characterizing existing methods, identifying flaws in existing methods, and designing or re-designing of the methods.
- Motivated graduates upholding social values & responsibilities, ethics & justice, and respect to laws and environment.
- Exercise the qualities of scholarly attainment and manners, sense of responsibility and accountability in the familial, professional, and, social environment.
- Demonstrate sound capacity to conduct independent research and deliver effective presentation.
- Extend the frontier of acquired knowledge through further independent learning, and, thus, add to existing knowledge bank.

The curriculum is under revision according to the UGC instruction and to meet Board of Accreditation for Engineering & Technical Education (BAETE) accreditation.
Two MoUs have been signed with the Department of DCE and some more are underway.
1. STA and DCE-BUTEX
AN MoU has been signed between between Strategic Alliance ( which is implemented by Deutsche Geselleschaft fur international Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH) and Department of Dyes and Chemicals Engineering (DCE), BUTEX on 30 July 2018. The main objectives of STA on sustainable chemicals and environmental management is to i) identify and support local qualification and requalification structures for graduate trainers; ii) to connect these trainers to private sector; iii) connect to other universities in the countries who teach textile and environment engineering. These alliance include six trainings for BUTEX faculties, undergraduate students and seminar/workshop by renowned professor from Germany. Additionally, professional training has been conducted, which includes factory, buyers and university faculty to develop service provider for the industry.
a) Training of the Teachers
A three day training program for 30 teachers from all departments of BUTEX has been held on 28 to 30 August 2018. The trainer was Dr Jürgen Hannak from adelphi, Dr Abbas Uddin Shiyak from DCE and Mohammad Omar Faruq from GIZ. The training includes 2 days classroom training and one day field training.

b) Training for the students
The two days long training program targeted at strengthening the local students on safe and sound management of chemicals in textile industry and to contribute to the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC), Detox and SAICM goals. Two separate training has been held: one for students of 41 and 42 batches on 16 and 17 April 2019 and the second one for 43 batch 8th and 9th April 2019 at Ascott The Residence, Baridhara. 8 students were selected from those two trainings who have got further trainings with professional consultant. There are three more trainings in the pipeline.

c) Seminar and worksop

2. Promoting Sustainable Fashion and Textiles Practises: A UK-Bangladesh collaborative Project
supports cutting-edge research to address challenges faced by developing countries. Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) and DCE, BUTEX collaborated together to bring “Sustainable Fashion and Textile Practises in Bangladesh” under Global Climate Challenge Research fund. The project is led by Dr. Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem, a digital fashion expert, from the Manchester Fashion Institute as the Principal Investigator in collaboration with Dr Julfikar Haider, the co-investigator, from the MMU’s University’s Department of Engineering. Dr Abbas Uddin Shiyak is working as a post-doctoral Research Associates and four Faculties are working as Research Assistant in this project. BUFT is also partnering in this project.
The project is focused on three main areas within the overall topic of Fashion and Sustainability. Firstly, there is the aim to conduct research in the field of Zero-Waste apparel production and material sustainability. This is connected to the aim to do Bangladesh-specific research on this thematic area. Secondly, the project wants to generate impact through the promotion of research findings, specifically on zero-waste pattern cutting and material sustainability via virtual networking events. Thirdly, the final research objective is based on developing a framework for sustainable fashion and textile production in Bangladesh through the stakeholder’s participatory workshops.
3. With Tuv-Rheinland Bangladesh Pvt. Ltd
A memorandum of understanding was approved by the syndicate on 29 July 2020 between TUV Rheinland Bangladesh Pvt. Ltd and Department of Dyes and Chemicals Engineering, Bangladesh University of Textiles. This MoU sets forth the intentions of the parties for increased collaboration, cooperation and interaction through
- Workshop and training by experts from TR Bangladesh to DCE-BUTEX students on different environmental topics, approximately 4-6 workshops per year.
- Supporting technical expertise to set up a new lab and develop different test methods, proficiency, and correlations tests.
- Lab tours for the students of BUTEX at TR Bangladesh laboratory.
- Research work support from TR Bangladesh for the students of BUTEX in their Undergraduate project, Masters and upcoming PhD program.
4. With Huntsman (Singapore) Pte Ltd
A MoU has been approved by the Syndicate with Huntsman (Singapore) Pte Ltd and DCE to form cooperation and interaction for fundamental and industrial research in the area of Application of Chemicals and Dyes on Textile Fabrics in following areas
- Projects pertaining to textile finishing effects and chemicals;
- Strengthen and support Dyes and Chemical Engineering research laboratory practices to international standards. Establish SOPs and Quality management processes.
- Huntsman Safety standards and practices workshop and training for students and faculty members to embrace the safety culture and best industrial practices
- PhD or other graduate programs for Huntsman associates based on industrial driven projects. The PhD projects are to be jointly decided by Huntsman and BUTEX.
- Huntsman – BUTEX PhD: Co guide partnership for driving industrial research for students. Opportunity for an industrial supervisor for undergraduate, Masters and PhD research.
- University-Industry training via Industrial training for undergraduates, Internships, Postdocs, faculty training and exchange programs
- Platform to share innovation via forums, quarterly/annual newsletters, technical workshops and seminars between the two organizations to enhance scientific exchange and culture
• Development of eco-friendly natural dyeing process for cotton fabric by waste tea extract (memo no BUTEX/2021/RNE/009)
• Design and development of a laboratory prototype Machine to recycle plastic for filament extrusion
• The dye adsorption capability of Aluminium doped Cobalt-Manganese ferrites synthesised by sol-gel auto combustion methods
• Designing of a prototype carding machine (memo no BUTEX/2021/RNE/009 dated 23/98/2021 and বাটেবি/প্রশা:/১৪০/২০১৬ dated 04/12/2021)
• Fragrance Extraction from recycled natural sources
• Designing and building prototype sample dyeing machine (UGC grant memo no 37-01-0000-073-04-018/2019 dated 11/03/2020)
